Wilhelmus plays in Hungary: Robin Frijns secures fourth season victory

BUDAPEST - Robin Frijns has won the first race of the weekend in Formula BMW. The talented Dutchman stayed ahead of his main competitor Jack Harvey at the F1 circuit in Hungary. For the fourth time this season, Frijns was allowed to step onto the top of the podium. George Katsinis crossed the finish line in third place and finished on the podium for the first time in his career. Carlos Sainz Junior finished fourth and won the Rookies' race for the eighth time. Hannes van Asseldonk finished tenth.

Polesitter Frijns got away well and kept Harvey behind him. The Brit started from third but was able to pass Daniil Kvyat on the run to the first corner. Harvey, however, had to defend strongly against the Russian, allowing Frijns to build up a lead of more than one and a half seconds in the first lap. Sainz then passed Kvyat and put pressure on Harvey. Frijns pulled further away as a result, but behind him, the field closed up. Several times the young talents proved that overtaking on the narrow Hungaroring is perfectly possible. In the tenth lap, Katsinis passed Sainz, after which a lap later Kvyat was passed by Ledogar. The Frenchman had previously made a successful overtaking move on Timmy Hansen. Frijns drove to victory without problems and gained some ground on championship leader Harvey. The Brit starts the second race from pole position, with the Dutchman behind him in P3.

"It was a great feeling when I was flagged as the winner," Frijns confessed. "We worked hard for it. In spring we weren't doing so well here, but this weekend we are very competitive. The car felt fantastic and offered a lot of grip. My start was very good, as was the first lap. After that, I was able to consolidate my lead. Jack had to fight hard for second place, which allowed me to pull away quite easily. When he shook off Carlos, he drove the same laps as I did. It's great to be on the podium again."
